We are doing personal studies about Chinese things
For this activity we were given some topics for us to chose from and study. I chose Chinese arts, which meant I could study different arts like Chinese Calligraphy, Porcelain, Paper cutting and Music.

My Idol - Identity - NZL

My idol, the one I look up to is Ocean Ramsey.

Ocean Ramsey is a model, marine biologist and a conservationist who specializes in sharks.

Any spare time she has she will be in the ocean swimming with sharks, turtles or many other

ocean animals.

I love sharks and want to study them and work with them when I’m older. I was first introduced

to her work when my mum found a clip of her on Instagram. I am fascinated by sharks and

other ocean animals and i would love to be around them a lot. I have always wanted to go

swimming with sharks, dolphins, turtles and other ocean animals.

I have always wanted to meet Ocean Ramsey and we both have interests about sharks and

other ocean animals.

I think that tourists should come during the Summer time because a lot of our native things are out.

Week 1 Day 5 Activity 3

Let’s imagine that New Zealand was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean next week (Eek!). Before it sinks you are asked to write a blog post telling people what life was like in New Zealand in 2018. On your blog, post a description of life in New Zealand in 2018. Please remember that the people who read your post will have never been to New Zealand or even seen a picture so it is your job to ‘paint a picture’ of New Zealand using your words. You can also post pictures, if you wish. Be sure to fully attribute the pictures.

I lived in a small area inland called Moonlight/Atarau, about half an hour away from Greymouth, on the West Coast of the South Island. Most of the people in this area are farmers, dairy and beef. There are beautiful rivers and lakes where people can go swimming, rafting and kayaking. There are tree left, right and center, native and pine. There are many bush tracks which people use to run, walk and bike. Everyone is very sociable, up for a chat anytime. There are some cities as well like Christchurch, Auckland and NZ's capital Wellington. In winter there are some awesome ski fields around, especially down south. NZ was beautiful and there was nowhere in the world anywhere like it.

On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.

Hey Caitlyn 

How are you? What have you been up to lately? I have just been to the tundra and it is amazing...ly cold. I went in the summer and it was just a bit warmer than our winter. I had a tour around the place and the scenery was incredible. When looking out of a window you can see the  large mountains off in the distance, it is beautiful.

I wish you could be with me right now, you would love it.

SLJ - Towering Timbers

Week 1 Day 5 Activity 1

What do you think about logging? On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.

I don't know what to believe because

• Wood is extremely helpful for creating things e.g. houses, chairs, tables
• It makes nice money for NZ

but then 

• Where the trees have been logged it just ruins the landscape
• Wildlife create homes to have them taken away

SLJ - Salt and Pepper

Week 1 Day 4 Activity 3

Let’s imagine that you were given enough money to build your very own hotel. On your blog tell us where you would build your hotel and what you would use to build it. For an extra five points, use Google Drawings to design one room in your hotel. You can also use a paper and pencil to draw your room, take a picture of the drawing, and post it on your blog.

I would build a hotel underwater in a submarine type thing which is attached to a floating island. I took inspiration from Roald Dahl's book, Charlie and the great glass elevator, where the President of America and NASA created a space hotel. You would get a 3 minute boat ride out to a floating island, with the rooms underneath you can stay for as long as you would like. There are many cool things to do including diving, watching great movies at the theater, enjoy a relaxing time at the spa and sauna, work out at the gym, looking around at the underwater life in the glass room, get boat tours to see whales, dolphins and other underwater creatures and eating the best seafood and ocean inspired food. The hotel would be made of aluminum (And lots of it) because it is a strong and lightweight metal.

It would be called ' The Sunken Treasure ' with a slogan ' Where the water takes you '

SLJ - Pancakes and Maple Syrup?

For this activity you are asked to choose one of your favourite foods. On your blog, write the name of your favourite food and then tell us how to make it. You may need to ask a family member, friend or Google (!) for help, if you do not normally make this food for yourself.

Salmon bagels have been my absolute favourite food for a long time.

I just buy some bagels from the supermarket or a bakery and just cut one in half and then I put them in the toaster on bagel mode. Once that is done, I spread on some cream cheese and place some salmon on and there you have Salmon Bagels.

1) The name of the animal is the Saimaa ringed seal.

2) Building snow banks for the female to build a lair inside so she can have her pup inside instead of on the ice where most pups would dye.

3) They have helped to increase the population by helping the pups not dye at the very beginning.

SLJ D3 A2: The Secretive Skink

On your blog list three pros (good things) and three cons (bad things) about working as a DOC ranger. At the bottom of your post, tell us whether you would like to be a DOC Ranger or not.

Here are my pros and cons of being a DOC Ranger -

Pros:

• You get to see some many beautiful things the everyday person can't
• Getting outdoors into the natural world
• You get to learn so much more things about the wildlife

Cons:

• Many people won't like what DOC decides to do and will protest
• Most people don't stop and try to make themselves better to help out
• Having to be outdoors whatever the weather is

I have an idea of becoming a DOC Ranger and Grandad worked at DOC being the manager of Greymouth for part of it for 18 yrs and my uncle is also a DOC worker and my family is around the wildlife quite a lot. I am very lucky to live next door to a kiwi sanctuary and I have helped out so much a kiwi was named after me, now wow, that is very incredible and I still get the regular updates on her. My family also owns the Moonlight hut, which is in the Paparoa National Park. 

SLJ D3 - Fantastic Beasts

For this activity, please watch this cool book trailer. Year 7 and Year 8 students in South Auckland, New Zealand helped to make it. Once you have watched the video, use your imagination and create your very own beast. What does your beast look, smell, feel, and sound like? On your blog, post a description of your beast. Use interesting adjectives (describing words) to tell us about your beast.

Kimbodrous Dragon

Description - 

It is a very large beast weighing 5 tons and can grow up to 50 feet long and 30 feet high. If you see one there will be no escape for it can smell scents up to 3 km away and can go up to a speed of 100km per hour. These creatures live anywhere and everywhere. They are a burnt red/ rusty colour with spikes as sharp as knives all the way along their spine down to a bombay knocker at the end of the tail. The only way to tell them apart is that a male has a bigger tail. Their breed is endangered and there is a population of only 80 left.

It was actually quite easy, all I did was... there are 365 days in a year so I times that by 3 then add ml on the end to end up with 1095 ml (one thousand and ninety five)

SLJ Day 2 Activity 1: Giants Among Us

On your blog, tell us whether you would like to go and visit Tāne Mahuta one day. Be sure to tell us why you do (or do not) want to visit this endemic tree.

I would like to visit Tāne Mahuta because it is incredible how big and different trees can be.

I have visited what is called ' The Biggest Rata Tree In NZ' in Reefton with my Grandparents and my Parents. It took quite a few of me to get around the large tree.

I chose three teams that wouldn't really be heard about, before this I never even knew about the Ice Fernz or the Kiwi Ferns. My favourite uniform would be the white ferns because you could wear this outfit most days.

SLJ Activity 2: North and South

Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post.

My home town would be Moonlight/Atarau. Back in the 1800's Gorge Moonlight sailed across from Scotland and ended up down south in otago, Moonlight/Macraes Flat, where he started a gold rush. After that he started to travel up and ended up on the West Coast. He found himself up in the Paparoas, where he found gold and created a new gold rush. He because of that, everyone started to build houses along the tracks, shop started opening like a butcher and a greengrocer and there was a school. The place was there for named after him. He had a wife and two children. Afterwards they moved to Murchison to own a hotel.

What is really awesome that I am the 7th generation female to live in Moonlight which is pretty cool.

Where I live it is mainly farmland and beautiful bush. There are many rivers and creeks around us where we can fish and swim. There are heaps of tracks around for a tramps and day walks. In our bush there are many rare and endangered things like the great spotted kiwi or the yellow rata, which my Grandad and I spotted and got a helicopter ride to see them up close and to get some photographs. 

I am so gratefull to live in such a beautiful inviroment and i don't think there would be any better place to live.

SLJ Activity 1: The legend of New Zealand

There are so many maori legends about NZ. Different tribes have their own myths and legends about our beautiful Aotearoa, The land of long white cloud. Here is my top three favourite facts off this website.

1. Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise because it is 496.3 kilometers away from the International Date Line.

2. It is one of the three countries in the world that has two official national anthems of equal standing. The first is God Save the Queen and the other is God Defend New Zealand.

3. It was the first major nation to have universal suffrage. In 1893 all male and female citizens are legally allowed to vote.

Another cool fact is that New Zealand was once governed by the territory of New South Wales and later was a part of Australia.
